On Friday, March 5, 2021, Governor Gavin Newsom was joined by legislative leaders, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, and State Board of Education President Linda Darling-Hammond, at a virtual ceremony to sign Assembly Bill (AB) 86 into law.
AB 86 is a budget bill that contains the provisions of the deal announced earlier this week to provide $2 billion for In-Person Instruction Grants and $4.6 billion for Expanded Learning Opportunities Grants to local educational agencies (see “Deal Reached on Reopening Grants” in the March 2021 Fiscal Report).
The signing of AB 86 ends months of negotiations between the Newsom Administration, the Legislature, and key education stakeholders.
As a budget bill, AB 86 went into effect immediately upon the Governor’s signature.
